The 18-game season is only one-sixth of the way over and a game of the year candidate has already been put on a pedestal. “Easily the game of the year,'' said Haffey captain Jake Meyer. “It was the best game that I have been a part of in three years of playing WayCo ball: error free for seven innings on both sides. Both teams were awesome tonight.''

The 5-3 win for Haffey doesn't earn the nod as early Game of the Year nominee for a walk off homer or even an amazing catch to hold onto the victory. The game's appeal lies in the level of play that both teams reached in the seven innings.

With two outs in the top of the first, Meyer singled up the middle and four-hitter Chris Jenny drove Meyer and himself home with a deep shot to left, giving Haffey the 2-0 lead going into the bottom half of the first.

Kitchen Interiors countered with three runs of their own. Led by strategic hitting from Phil Hastings and Rico Sullivan, Kitchen Interiors put its only runs of the game on the board in the first inning. Over the next five innings both teams turned in exceptional defensive play. ``Rico and Connor McNeil were great for us,'' said Hastings. ``Connor at third and Rico at short, they were making big plays all night.''

In the top of the seventh, Haffey got back on the board with some heads up base running and key hits from the top of the order. Christian Kilburn and Scott Colantropo led off with singles and Meyer moved them over to second and third with a sacrifice fly. Jenny, hitting clean up, stepped to the plate with the winning run on second. His single into shallow left brought Kilburn and Colantropo to the plate to take the 4-3 lead. Isaac Aaron followed up after the second out with a single that brought Jenny home for an insurance run and gave Haffey the 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

Haffey's defense controlled the game, holding Kitchen Interiors hitless for 16 straight until a seventh-inning single off the third base found Kitchen Interiors with its first base runner in almost an hour of game time.

Another Kitchen Interiors single brought the winning run to the plate with two down, but they were unable to capitalize and Haffey came away with the 5-3 victory.
